HISTORICAL TRAILS AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR

MONTE GRAPPA AND THE SACRED RIVER OF THE NATION: THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN VENETO

Few areas saw as much action as the land surrounding the Tegorzo Hotel during the First World War. Italian, Austro-Hungarian, Slavic, German, French and British troops all fought on this strip of land. In 1917 and 1918, almost 80,000 soldiers perished in the Monte Grappa area, as can be seen from the ossuaries all around.

The Grappa massif is part of the Prealps and Cima Grappa reaches 1775 metres above sea level, standing like ramparts over the entire zone. A number of simple trails are available in the area for families and enthusiasts who want to explore trenches and ossuaries.

Military constructions, mausoleums and ossuaries are dotted across a landscape that is still marked by the presence of forts and fortified trenches and bays, giving plenty of food for thought.

During the bloody, hard-fought battles that took place on Monte Grappa (“the sacred mountain of the nation”) and the other mountains nearby, the valiant Italian soldiers managed to hold their positions and force the enemy to retreat.

Today, there are trails running through the former combat zones. They are perfect places for trekking, Nordic walking or hiking while admiring the breathtaking landscape and learning all about the historical events.
