FRUIT AND VEGETABLES FROM OUR RESTAURANT’S ZERO FOOD MILES GARDEN!
Our chef Armando’s love of nature and gardening has led to the creation of a zero food miles garden that spans approximately 100 m² and is directly managed by the Gerlin family.
In our garden, we follow the seasons and respect the environment. As well as “zero food miles”, we could almost talk of “zero food yards” because it is just over 50 yards from the restaurant. The fact that we own and work in the garden ourselves means that we can ensure that no chemical products are used and everything is as natural as possible. Consequently, we are able to serve delicious, healthy dishes with no preservatives.
Organic vegetables and fruits of our zero food miles garden
A number of types of vegetables are planted here in our organic zero food miles garden:
- diamant courgettes,
- picchio courgettes,
- round Tuscan courgettes,
- gialet beans,
- runner beans,
- French beans,
- various kinds of lettuce,
- potatoes (every other year)
In addition, we have planted a number of fruit trees, including pear, apple, apricot, plum, peach and fig trees. We use the fruit to make jam and cakes.
We have some exquisite wild berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. The latter come from the plants of Mario Balzan, who is the local carpenter and a dear family friend.
The fact that no chemical products are used means that the fruit sometimes does not look quite as “perfect” as it does on supermarket shelves, but the clear, rich flavour makes it a real delight.
